Vote Already Taken
We've been informed that the State School Board has already voted YES on the Core Standards issue. These board members have sold out Missouri's parents and their kids to the federal govt. Please stay tuned, folks. We'll have more info on how you can react to this vote. Remember, many of these board members could well have political aspirations. Turning their backs on our kids won't go over well with Missouri voters. We'll make sure.

"Race To The Top" Education Program Must be Stopped
Race To The Top
(A Clear & Present Danger to the Sovereignty of Missouri's Education System)
Bullets:
- eliminates local control over content and parental involvement,
- silences parental objections over content being taught,
- abolishes current local standards,
- potentially adopts national standards,
- potentially forces nationalized textbooks not chosen by districts, and
- absorbs crushing state debt when initial funds are gone.
Background:
Race to the Top (RT3) is a $4.3 billion dollar grant initiative being offered to states in exchange for a massive overhaul of our public education system. As state budgets are strapped due to the economic crisis, many districts are scrambling to figure out how they are going to fund all of their programs for the next school year. Missouri has submitted a grant proposal to compete for a piece of the pie. This grant is a one-time award spread out over a four year period. Only half of the award money will actually flow through to Missouri schools. The other half goes to the state. If awarded the grant, Missouri will be required to scrap our current standards and implement standards that are currently under construction by a consortium of 29 states.
This will eventually lead to National Standards for public education as set forth by the National Governor’s Council on Education. Missouri will now be required to give frequent assessments in several different areas that have been created by the consortia. This means school districts already hurting for money will now be required to update all of their technical systems in order to comply, but they will also have to revamp curriculum and textbooks to make sure they match these new standards. Once the money is gone, Missouri taxpayers will now be stuck funding and education system that they now have no voice in.
And where is a parent to go when they disagree about something that is being taught in one of the consortium mandated textbooks? Who does a parent raise concerns with when their child is being taught something that they find questionable?
Texas Governor Rick Perry has refused to sign his state’s grant intention for fear of what could possibly lead to a federal takeover of Texas schools. Missouri taxpayers need to understand that by simply applying for these funds and implementing these changes, we will no longer have local control of our public schools. Over 90% of Missouri school districts signed on to receive money in exchange for an overhaul of their schools. You can visit the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education web site and look over the lengthy 300 page grant proposal here: DESE/MO. Simply click on the Race to the Top icon at the top of the page.
Missouri citizens value and pride themselves in having a voice in the education of their children. Do not let the temptation of “free” money, even in these tough economic times take away your right to be involved in what your children are learning in school.
We are currently working with Senators and Representatives to determine the best strategy to stop this nationalized assault on Missouri's education system.
I urge each and every one of you to call your local school districts and school board members and ask to see a copy of the Memorandum of Understanding that they signed and submitted to the Governor in January.
